The Brownwood Police Explorers meet every Saturday from 10:00am to 12:30pm at the police department training facilities. The training facility is located at 1050 West Commerce. The meetings begin with a discussion of past and upcoming events and conclude with an instructional program related to the field of law enforcement. Topics for programs include but are not limited to patrol procedures, criminal laws, traffic laws, criminal and accident investigations, drug enforcement, and crime prevention and emergency communications. Membership Qualifications Any young adult between 15 and 20 years old is eligible to apply. Fourteen year olds may apply if they have completed the eighth grade. A registration fee of $18.00 is collected every year for membership in the Explorer program. There is a small fee for some Explorer activities, but this amount is always quite reasonable and the events are announced well in advance. Fundraising is the post's method of purchasing uniforms and equipment. Monetary donations are welcomed and accepted by the post. Events Explorer members will participate in fundraisers, communications and record keeping during basic law enforcement training. Scholarships Law enforcement explorer can apply themselves to various federal funded scholarships. Scholarships range anywhere from $500.00 to $1000.00. Some scholarships are in U.S. Savings Bonds. Most scholarships, in addition to the money, issue certificates or plaques. At the present time there are approximately eight scholarship programs an explorer member can apply himself/herself to. Awards The Law Enforcement Exploring Proficiency Awards program provides an opportunity for posts and their Explorers to earn a series of recognition items that acknowledge their law enforcement Exploring experience. These recognize community service, crime prevention, law enforcement service, law enforcement training, firearms training, emergency preparedness, tenure, and Explorer of the Year There are approximately thirteen proficiency awards that can be earned by an explorer member. Explorer Conference/Explorer Academy A Law Enforcement Explorer can attend, if eligible, the National Law Enforcement Explorer Conference in Washington D.C. and the National Law Enforcement Explorer Academy at the FBI facilities in Quantico Virginia. |
